What is the best home base for the Great Barrier Reef?

Cairns is the perfect home base for any trip to the Great Barrier Reef, but with so many accommodation options available for you, how do you know which is best for you? To help you on your search we've compiled our favourite Cairns hotels, BnBs and hostels below!

In 2026, Cairns and Port Douglas remain the premier "mainland" home bases for the Great Barrier Reef due to their proximity to the Outer Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Cairns is the "Adventure Hub," offering the widest variety of budget-friendly day trips, scuba diving schools, and large-scale catamarans. Port Douglas, located an hour north, offers a more "premium" and relaxed base with closer access to the pristine Agincourt Reef. For those seeking the "southern" reef experience, Bundaberg has become a popular base for visiting Lady Elliot Island (the "Home of the Manta Ray"). However, for the ultimate experience, staying on a Reef Island like Hamilton Island (Whitsundays) or Heron Island is considered the gold standard, as it allows you to snorkel directly off the beach into coral gardens without a 90-minute boat ride.
