Some believe that Petra may be Sela in the Old Testament, largely because of the meaning of the name (2 Kgs 14:7; Isa 16:1). Sela is “rock, cliff, fissure” in Semitic cognates, and Petra is “rock” in Greek. Others place Sela just north of Bozrah or believe it to be a general reference meaning “the rock, cliff.”
