What is the difference between ICOCA and Suica in Tokyo?

The SUICA and ICOCA Cards are prepaid e-money cards that can be used for transportation and shopping (SUICA is sold by JR East and ICOCA is sold by JR West). Both cards work the same way, and can often be used interchangeably.

In 2026, there is virtually no functional difference between using an ICOCA or a Suica card within Tokyo. Both are part of Japan’s "Nationwide Mutual Usage Service," meaning an ICOCA (issued by JR West in Osaka/Kyoto) works perfectly on Tokyo’s JR lines, subways, and buses, just like the local Suica. The only critical difference arises if you encounter an issue or want a refund; you can only return a Suica to a JR East station in Tokyo, and you can only return an ICOCA to a JR West station in the Kansai region. If you are starting your trip in Tokyo, you will likely get a Suica (or its digital version in Apple/Google Wallet). However, if you already have an ICOCA from a previous visit to Osaka, you can confidently use it at any Tokyo "Tap-and-Go" gate or convenience store without needing to purchase a new card.
