The most famous column in Berlin is the Victory Column (or Siegessäule), located in the heart of the Tiergarten park at the center of a major roundabout known as the Großer Stern. Completed in 1873, it was originally built to commemorate the Prussian victories in the Danish-Prussian War, the Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War. The column is topped by a massive, 8.3-meter-tall golden statue of Victoria, the Goddess of Victory, whom locals affectionately refer to as "Goldelse" (Golden Elsa). It stands nearly 67 meters tall and features a panoramic observation deck that offers one of the best views of the city's skyline and the Brandenburg Gate. The column gained modern international fame as the centerpiece of the "Love Parade" techno festival and as a prominent location in Wim Wenders' classic film Wings of Desire. Visitors can reach the column via pedestrian tunnels and climb the 285 steps to the top for a small admission fee.
