As of 2026, the fastest train in the Amtrak fleet is the NextGen Acela, which operates along the Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C. These new high-speed trainsets, which began phased service in late 2025, are capable of reaching top speeds of 160 mph (257 km/h) on specific segments of the track, particularly in parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This is a 10 mph increase over the original Acela's 150 mph limit. While these speeds are impressive for North America, the train's average speed is lower due to older sections of track and tight curves through historic communities. The NextGen Acela features advanced "tilting" technology that allows it to maintain higher speeds through those curves than standard regional trains. With nearly 30 of these new sets entering service through 2027, they represent the pinnacle of American rail travel, offering a significantly faster and smoother experience compared to the standard Northeast Regional or long-distance "Superliner" routes found elsewhere in the country.
