The main village on the Aran Islands is Kilronan (Cill Rónáin), located on Inis Mór (Inishmore), the largest of the three islands off the coast of County Galway, Ireland. Kilronan serves as the primary gateway for the islands, as it is the arrival point for the ferries from Rossaveel and Doolin. As the "capital" of the islands in 2026, it contains the most essential services, including the main supermarket, a post office, bike hire shops, and several traditional pubs like Joe Watty’s where you can hear live Irish music. It is also the hub for the island's pony-and-trap tours and bus tours that take visitors to the prehistoric cliffside fort of Dún Aonghasa. While the village is small and charming, it is where most of the island's approximately 800 residents live and work. Visitors staying overnight will find the widest range of B&Bs and guesthouses here, making it the perfect base for exploring the rugged limestone landscapes, ancient Christian ruins, and unique Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) culture of the archipelago.
