What is the meaning of eTA visa?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller's passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

When can't I use the VWP (ESTA) and need a visa?
  • you traveled to certain countries (Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen on or after March 1, 2011),
  • you are a dual national of any of the above mentioned countries,
  • you've been denied an ESTA, visa or entry into the United States in the past,
