What is the most beautiful part of the Bernina Express?

1. The Bernina Pass: This is where the train climbs to its highest point, offering some of the most iconic vistas of snow-capped peaks, rugged terrain, and alpine lakes. 2. Brusio Spiral Viaduct: Located between Poschiavo and Tirano, this remarkable spiral viaduct is a highlight of the journey.

While the entire 4-hour journey from Chur to Tirano is spectacular, the most beautiful and iconic section is undoubtedly the Brusio Spiral Viaduct and the Alp Grüm pass. The Brusio Viaduct is a masterpiece of engineering that allows the train to gain or lose elevation in a tight valley by traveling in a 360-degree stone circle. Another high point is the Ospizio Bernina, the highest point on the line at 2,253 meters (7,391 feet), where the train skirts the milky-white Lago Bianco and the black Lej Nair. The transition from the high-alpine glaciers of the Bernina Range down to the palm trees and vineyards of Italy's Valtellina valley is a dramatic geographical shift that defines the "Express" experience. In 2026, the panoramic "Panorama Cars" with floor-to-ceiling windows provide an unobstructed view of the Morteratsch Glacier, which is often cited as the most "jaw-dropping" moment for first-time travelers. Many enthusiasts recommend sitting on the right-hand side when traveling south to get the best views of the lakes and the spiral viaduct.

There is a coach with panoramic views in first class AND in second class. In my view the best option and most economic way is the second class coach with panoramic views. First class has a bit more space. We bought our tickets on the spot and the train was almost empty (beginning of February and during the week).
