The UK rail system is currently undergoing a historic transformation and is officially transitioning to be known as Great British Railways (GBR). In 2024 and 2025, the British government introduced legislation to end the fragmented "franchising" model that had been in place since the 1990s. Under the new GBR brand, which began a national rollout in spring 2026, the majority of passenger rail services and the underlying infrastructure (previously managed by Network Rail) are being unified under a single publicly owned body. This "directing mind" for the railway aims to simplify the passenger experience by providing a single website and app for all ticket sales and a more consistent timetable. While some devolved operators like ScotRail and Transport for Wales, as well as "open-access" operators like Lumo and Grand Central, remain operationally independent, the overarching brand for the national network is now Great British Railways, symbolized by a modernized version of the classic "double arrow" logo.
