What ride did Tron replace?

Magic Kingdom will now be the second Disney theme park in the world to feature this ride, which is an expansion, not a replacement of any previous attraction, of Tomorrowland — built right next to “Space Mountain” and “Tomorrowland Speedway.”

TRON Lightcycle / Run at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom did not technically replace an existing ride, but rather expanded the footprint of Tomorrowland. It was built on a previously unused plot of land located north of Space Mountain and the Tomorrowland Speedway. While there were early rumors and speculation that it might replace the Speedway, Disney ultimately chose to keep the classic car attraction, though the Speedway's track was slightly rerouted and modified to accommodate the massive canopy structure of the Tron coaster. In contrast, at Shanghai Disneyland, the Tron attraction was an original "opening day" feature. The 2026 experience in Orlando is a "twin" to the Shanghai version, featuring high-speed launches and a dramatic illuminated canopy. By placing it next to Space Mountain, Disney created a high-energy "thrill corridor" in Tomorrowland without the need to demolish beloved, albeit older, attractions like the Speedway or the PeopleMover.

We would classify it as less intense than Expedition Everest or the inversions on Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, but more intense than the more “family” coasters like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Slinky Dog Dash.

TRON does move up and down a fair bit, but there's very little of that “stomach-drop” feeling with your feet leaving the floor. That's for two reasons. The first is that on a Lightcycle your head points down, not your feet. But the bigger reason is that almost all of TRON's rise-and-drop motion includes a turn.

With top speeds of just under 60 miles per hour, TRON Lightcycle/Run is one of the fastest rides in Walt Disney World and certainly the fastest roller coaster you will find in Magic Kingdom. For comparison, its neighbor Space Mountain reaches half that maximum speed at 27 miles per hour.

The ride is adjacent to Space Mountain, Disney's original high-thrill coaster, which will make comparisons inevitable. Tron is smoother and much faster – Space Mountain maxes out at a relatively tame 27 mph. But the nostalgic in me preferred the jerky, in-the-dark dips and turns of Space Mountain.

There's nothing slow about this ride. If you have a thrill seeker who enjoys speed, Tron will not be too scary for them. One thing to note: it's a relatively short ride that truly only lasts 60 seconds once in motion. So even if Tron turns out to be scary, it should be a very short experience.
