What roller coaster did they take down at Kings Island?

The Vortex's departure marks the second year in a row that Kings Island has permanently shuttered one of its coasters. Firehawk ended its run at the park last fall to make room for a new scream machine known as Orion, which will be the tallest, fastest and longest steel roller coaster ever constructed at Kings Island.

The most significant roller coaster removed from Kings Island in recent years was Vortex, which was permanently retired and dismantled at the end of the 2019 season. When it opened in 1987, Vortex was a record-breaking steel coaster featuring six inversions and a 138-foot drop. After 33 seasons and over 46 million riders, the park decided to "retire" the ride due to the aging steel structure and increasing maintenance requirements. In 2026, the "Vortex plot" in the Coney Mall section of the park remains a subject of intense speculation among fans, as it is one of the largest undeveloped spaces within the park's boundaries. While several smaller flat rides have been cycled out, the removal of Vortex remains the most impactful "loss" for coaster enthusiasts, who often visit the park's 2026 museum displays to see the old ride's train cars and commemorative photos.
