When did MagicBands stop being free?

Implementation. Until January 1, 2021, MagicBands were free to all Disney Resort guests. Until August 16, 2021, the bands were free to annual passholders. While other guests receive an RFID-enabled Key to the World card, they are able to purchase a MagicBand online or at the parks.

As of December 31, 2020, Magicbands will no longer be provided on a complimentary basis for anyone with check-in reservations. This news was a bit disappointing but not all is lost. Yes, you can use a MagicBand from a previous Walt Disney World vacation for your next Walt Disney World vacation as long as it is active in your My Disney Experience account.

You can use your phone. Create a Magic Mobile pass within the My Disney Experience app. As long as you're using your phone to only scan in YOURSELF (meaning not you AND the other members of your party), then it should be fine. It might be slower than using a MagicBand, but it still works.

Under all of your MagicBands you are going to see the option to Activate/Deactivate depending on the status and the option to Report Lost. If your MagicBand is currently deactivated, you'll just select the Activate button and it will be good to go.
