Generally, if you travel by car, bus or train, you need to reach Split or Drvenik in central Dalmatia, where you can take a ferry to Hvar or catamaran to Hvar (from Split). Ferries Split - Stari Grad (Hvar), and Drvenik Sucuraj take cars.

In 2026, there are also seasonal catamarans departing from Dubrovnik (taking about 3 to 3.5 hours) and from nearby islands like Brač, Korčula, and Mljet. If you are driving a rental car from the south, you can also take a short, 35-minute car ferry from Drvenik to Sućuraj on the eastern tip of Hvar island. For most international travelers, the Split-Hvar Town catamaran remains the most popular and efficient route, with up to 15–20 departures per day during the peak summer months, serviced by operators like Jadrolinija, Krilo, and TP Line.
