The trail begins in the central square of the old village of Monterosso, and immediately starts climbing through vineyards and terraced fields, crossing streams and going by a few farmhouses.

You can start from either direction (Monterosso, heading south, or Riomaggiore, heading north). But here's a tip: Start from Riomaggiore, where the paths are easier and paved, and work your way up to the more challenging trails. That way, you can stop at any time? and head to the nearest train station if you have to!
Hiking trail Levanto - MonterossoThe trail starts on the east end of the beach promenade in Levanto by stairs up to the castle (castello). This path is an old donkey trail and goes through pine forests and Mediterranean vegetation. Nice views over Levanto as you climb the hill.
If you want a much easier hike, definitely hike from Vernazza to Monterosso (and not vice versa). The trail is much easier and Monterosso has the best beach of all five villages — so you can relax on the beach after your hike! Be sure to bring water and snacks on your hike!

By Train. Monterosso has its own train station and can be reached from either La Spezia or Levanto. From La Spezia, take the local train (treno regionale) in the direction of Sestri Levante and get off at the Monterosso stop. From Levanto, take the regional train in the direction of La Spezia Centrale.
