George Washington is buried in a tomb on his beloved estate, Mount Vernon, located in Fairfax County, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. According to his specific instructions in his will, he was interred in a family vault on the property after his death in 1799. However, the original family vault was in poor repair, and in 1831, his remains (along with those of Martha Washington) were moved to the "New Tomb" on the estate, which is where they rest today. Interestingly, there is an empty "crypt" located directly beneath the center of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Congress had originally intended for Washington to be buried there as a national monument, but the Washington family honored the late President's explicit wish to remain at Mount Vernon. Today, the tomb is a site of pilgrimage where thousands of visitors pay their respects each year.
