Do not travel to Russia due to the security environment and the impacts of the military conflict with Ukraine. Due to recent military tensions additional security restrictions, including some limitations on movement, may remain in place in some regions. Further measures may be implemented at short notice.
In September 2023, four European airlines continue to utilize Russian airspace and offer flights to Russian destinations. These carriers and their country of origin are Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines (Turkey), Air Serbia(Serbia), and Belavia (Belarus).
Most of the carriers still overflying Russia, however, are based in Asia and the Middle East — many of which are household names like Qatar Airways, Air China, Etihad Airways, and Emirates. And, some of these routes are even flying to and from the US.
United, British Airways, and Finnair are all avoiding the area. Russia's airspace is closed to many global airlines, forcing carriers to detour around the nation. Routes to and from Asia are up to four hours longer.
Direct flights are currently operating from Moscow and other major Russian cities to Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Thailand, India, and other destinations. European and North American airspace remains closed.
The EU-Russia Visa Facilitation agreement entered into force in June 2007. It eased the issuance of visas to citizens of the Union and the Russian Federation for intended stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period.

Flights to Russia are offered by a number of airlines, including British Airways and Aeroflot. The arrival of low cost carriers has meant cheap tickets to Russia are even more prevalent in the marketplace. Many routes are made up of a combination of flights and airlines, as direct flights are not common.
Abkhazia was the most popular outbound destination for Russians in 2022, with over 5.4 million tourists visiting that territory, compared to 5.1 million recorded in the previous year. The number of travelers visiting Turkey exceeded 4.6 million. In total, Russians made approximately 22.5 million outbound trips in 2022.
This suspension was extended until further notice on 24 February 2022, following the closure of Ukrainian airspace.
