The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, resulted in the total destruction of the entire World Trade Center complex in New York City. This included the iconic North Tower (1 WTC) and South Tower (2 WTC), which collapsed following the aircraft impacts. Additionally, the Marriott World Trade Center (3 WTC) was crushed by the falling towers, and 7 World Trade Center collapsed later that afternoon due to uncontrolled fires. Other buildings in the immediate vicinity that were destroyed or sustained irreparable damage included 4 WTC, 5 WTC, and 6 WTC, as well as the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Beyond New York, a portion of The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, was significantly damaged and partially collapsed after the impact of Flight 77. While most people focus on the Twin Towers, the loss of these surrounding structures represented one of the largest architectural catastrophes in history, eventually leading to a complete multi-decade rebuilding of the 16-acre "Ground Zero" site into the new World Trade Center hub seen today.
