Which Great lake has biggest waves?

In most cases, lakes are confined to smaller fetches which limit wave size, but the Great Lakes are large enough to produce frequent swells up to several metres. However, the highest ever recorded waves were 8.7 metres, outside of Marquette, Michigan, on Lake Superior.

  1. Largest surface area – Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area (31,700 square miles). This gives storms more room to generate large waves.
  2. Greatest depth – It’s also the deepest of the Great Lakes (max depth about 1,332 feet), which allows waves to build more energy without being slowed by the lakebed until close to shore.
  3. Wave records – The highest officially recorded wave on Lake Superior was 28.8 feet (8.8 meters), measured by a buoy in 2017. However, mariners and researchers believe waves could exceed 30 feet during extreme storms.
  4. Storm conditions – Especially in late fall and winter, powerful low-pressure systems (known as “November gales” or “November witches”) can produce hurricane-force winds across the lake, creating massive, ocean-like waves.

For comparison, the other Great Lakes can also produce dangerous waves—Lake Erie and Lake Michigan, for example, have seen waves over 20 feet—but Lake Superior consistently has the greatest potential for the largest waves due to its size, depth, and exposure to strong winds.
