Air UK no longer exists as an independent entity in 2026, as it was fully absorbed into KLM Royal Dutch Airlines years ago. Originally formed in 1980 through the merger of several regional British airlines, Air UK became the largest regional airline in the United Kingdom. However, starting in 1987, KLM began acquiring shares in the company to strengthen its "feeder" network from British regional airports to its hub at Amsterdam Schiphol. By 1997, KLM had acquired a 100% stake in the airline, subsequently rebranding it as KLM uk in 1998. Eventually, the operations were merged into KLM Cityhopper, the regional subsidiary of the Air France-KLM Group. While the "Air UK" name is a piece of aviation history, its legacy lives on through the extensive network of flights that KLM still operates between various UK regional cities and Amsterdam, which remains one of the most efficient ways for British travelers to connect to global destinations via the Netherlands' primary international gateway.
