A Flight Information Service (FIS) is provided by Flight Information Service Officers (FISOs) or Air Traffic Service units to provide advice and information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flights. Unlike Air Traffic Controllers (ATC), FISOs do not issue "clearances" or "instructions" to pilots; instead, they provide essential data such as weather updates (METAR/TAF), information on aerodrome conditions, and reports on other known aircraft in the vicinity. This service is primarily used in uncontrolled airspace (Class G) or at smaller, "uncontrolled" airfields where full radar control isn't necessary. FISOs use the callsign "INFORMATION" (e.g., "London Information") to distinguish themselves from "TOWER" or "APPROACH" controllers. Their role is to enhance a pilot's situational awareness, but the ultimate responsibility for aircraft separation and navigation remains with the pilot in command.
