The primary individual jailed for the Costa Concordia disaster was the ship's captain, Francesco Schettino. Following the 2012 grounding of the cruise ship off the coast of Giglio, Italy, which resulted in 32 deaths, Schettino was convicted of multiple counts of manslaughter, causing a maritime disaster, and—most infamously—abandoning ship. In 2015, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison. After exhausting his legal appeals, he began serving his sentence in May 2017 at the Rebibbia prison in Rome. As of 2026, Schettino remains incarcerated, though he has reportedly engaged in academic pursuits and maintained a low profile behind bars. In addition to Schettino, five other Costa Crociere employees, including the helmsman and the crisis coordinator, received shorter prison sentences (ranging from 18 months to nearly 3 years) through plea bargains early in the legal process, though many of these were suspended or served through alternative means.
