Who will live in Windsor Castle?

Windsor Castle is the largest occupied castle in the world and home to hundreds of members of staff and some members of the Royal Family. Today the castle is still used as a residence for the royal family, and it will be the future home of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

In 2026, Windsor Castle serves as a primary residence and working palace for King Charles III and Queen Camilla, though they do not live there full-time. Following the tradition of Queen Elizabeth II, the King typically spends his weekends at Windsor and uses it for official state functions, such as the Garter Ceremony and hosting foreign heads of state. While the Royal Standard flies when the King is in residence, much of the castle’s day-to-day living quarters are occupied by a community of approximately 150 people who maintain the estate. This includes the Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle, the Dean of Windsor, the Military Knights of Windsor, and various household staff, security personnel, and clergy. Although there were rumors in previous years that the Prince and Princess of Wales (William and Catherine) might move from Adelaide Cottage into the main castle, they have maintained their residence at the cottage on the Windsor estate to provide a more "normal" upbringing for their children.
