It is a common misconception that the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was "removed" everywhere; it actually remains a flagship attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris, and a specialized version exists at Tokyo DisneySea. However, the version at Disney California Adventure was closed in January 2017 to be transformed into Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!. This decision was driven by Disney's desire to integrate more Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) intellectual property into the California park, which eventually led to the creation of Avengers Campus. Because the attraction in Florida is located in a park that is legally restricted from using many Marvel characters due to a pre-existing deal with Universal, the original Twilight Zone theme remains safe there. The change in California was controversial among purists but resulted in an attraction with a higher ride capacity and a completely different, high-energy "randomized" drop sequence that has proven to be immensely popular with the modern demographic.
