Why does Jet2 not go to Egypt?

Jet2.com is suspending services to the resorts of Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada from March 1 because of the political unrest. The company said the safety and comfort of our customers is our number one priority and has pledged to refund bookings.

Jet2.com and Jet2holidays primarily focus on "short-to-medium haul" Mediterranean and European city destinations that align with their fleet of Boeing 737 and Airbus A321 aircraft. While Egypt is a popular tourist destination, it sits at the very edge of the range for many of Jet2's current aircraft when flying from northern UK bases like Leeds Bradford or Edinburgh. Historically, Jet2 has been very cautious about expanding into North Africa due to political instability and fluctuating security concerns in the region, which can lead to sudden flight cancellations and logistical nightmares for a holiday-focused operator. Furthermore, the Egyptian market is already heavily dominated by competitors like TUI and easyJet, as well as charter carriers. Instead of Egypt, Jet2 has chosen to double-down on "safer" and more predictable growth in the Canary Islands, Turkey, and Greece, where they have established massive hotel partnerships. While there are frequent rumors of Jet2 adding Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh to their winter schedule as they take delivery of longer-range A321neo aircraft in 2026, they currently prioritize operational simplicity and high-frequency European routes.
