Why is Aerosmith ride closing down?

- The music has temporarily stopped at a popular ride at Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios theme park. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith closed on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023, to undergo refurbishment, according to Walt Disney World's website, and is expected to reopen sometime over the summer.

The "Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith" at Disney's Hollywood Studios is officially closing on March 2, 2026, to undergo a massive transformation into a Muppets-themed attraction. While the high-speed indoor coaster track and "launch" mechanism will remain the same, the Aerosmith branding—which has been the centerpiece of the ride since 1999—is being retired. This change is partly driven by Disney's strategy to better utilize its own massive IP (The Muppets) and move away from third-party band contracts that require complex licensing fees. The new experience will feature Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, bringing a more whimsical and humorous "Muppet-style" chaos to the Sunset Boulevard area. The retirement of the Aerosmith theme also allows Disney to modernize the pre-show and queue areas, which many felt had become "dated" in the era of Star Wars and Avengers. Fans of the original have until March 1 to get their "last ride" with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry before the limo pulls into the garage for good.

It was widely speculated that Disney would use the extended closure of Rock 'N' Roller Coaster to either eliminate Aerosmith or at least downplay its role in the ride. That has not happened. Disney's Hollywood Studios has begun a soft relaunch of Rock 'N' Roller Coaster, and it's still very clearly featuring Aerosmith.
