Why is Delta making it harder to access lounges?

The news comes as the airline struggled to handle overcrowding at popular lounges at Delta's major hubs like JFK Airport or Atlanta. Along with the lounge cutbacks, Delta is also making it increasingly more difficult for its customers to qualify for status on its SkyMiles program.

In 2026, Delta Air Lines continues its aggressive strategy to preserve the exclusivity and comfort of its Sky Club lounges, primarily to combat the chronic overcrowding that plagued the brand in recent years. The most significant shift occurred in February 2025, when Delta implemented strict annual visit limits for passengers who gain access via premium credit cards, such as the American Express Platinum or Delta SkyMiles Reserve. Unless cardholders spend a staggering $75,000 annually on their card, they are now limited to 10 or 15 visits per year. By "throttling" access for credit card users and completely eliminating lounge entry for Basic Economy passengers, Delta aims to restore a premium atmosphere for its highest-paying customers and elite frequent flyers. Additionally, the airline has pivoted toward opening ultra-exclusive Delta One Lounges in hubs like JFK, LAX, and Boston, which are strictly reserved for international business class travelers, further segmenting the "lounge experience" based on ticket value rather than just card ownership.
