While Disney owns Marvel, a legacy licensing agreement with Universal Destinations & Experiences prevents most Marvel characters from appearing at Walt Disney World. Signed in the 1990s (before Disney bought Marvel), the contract gives Universal exclusive theme park rights to the "Avengers," "X-Men," "Spider-Man," and "Fantastic Four" families East of the Mississippi River in perpetuity, as long as they keep their Marvel Super Hero Island at Islands of Adventure open. This is why you see a massive Marvel land at Universal Orlando but only Guardians of the Galaxy at Epcot; the Guardians were not part of that original regional exclusivity deal because they weren't prominently featured in Universal's attractions.
