Why isn t Russia in EPCOT?

The Soviet Union fell in 1991, leading to economic turmoil. The government of Russia decided not to move forward with sponsoring the pavilion at EPCOT.

Russia is not in the World Showcase at EPCOT primarily due to the collapse of the Soviet Union and subsequent funding issues. In the early 1990s, Disney went as far as creating detailed models and concept art for a Russia Pavilion, which was planned to feature a recreation of St. Basil’s Cathedral and a major show titled "Russia — The Bells of Change." There were even plans for two rides: a sleigh ride through the Russian winter and a story-based attraction. However, the political and economic instability following the 1991 dissolution of the USSR made it impossible to secure the necessary long-term sponsorship. At the time, Disney's model for World Showcase pavilions heavily relied on financial backing from the host country's government or major corporations. Although there have been intermittent rumors about reviving the project, the current geopolitical climate in 2026 makes the addition of a Russian pavilion highly unlikely for the foreseeable future, as Disney focuses on expanding its existing intellectual property rather than new national pavilions.
