Are cars allowed on Toronto Island?

Cars are not permitted on the islands. See the Ferry Information page for more details.

Generally, no, private cars are not allowed on Toronto Island. The island is one of North America's largest car-free urban communities, creating a peaceful environment for cyclists and pedestrians. Access is primarily via the ferry system from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal. However, there are very strict exceptions in 2026: emergency vehicles and service/commercial vehicles (like delivery trucks or garbage collectors) are permitted. Occasionally, residents with special permits or marina members may be allowed to transport a vehicle via the Ongiara ferry for specific maintenance purposes, but they cannot drive them around the park for leisure. In 2026, the "vehicle ticket" for the ferry is quite expensive (upwards of $185) to discourage non-essential use. Most visitors explore the islands via the extensive network of paved paths using bicycles or the iconic "quadricycles" (four-wheeled bikes) available for rent near the Centre Island pier.
