Implementation. Until January 1, 2021, MagicBands were free to all Disney Resort guests. Until August 16, 2021, the bands were free to annual passholders. While other guests receive an RFID-enabled Key to the World card, they are able to purchase a MagicBand online or at the parks.
If you stay at the Disney hotel often or visit the parks regularly — for example, if you're a Magic Key or Annual Pass holder — a MagicBand might be worth it. Families with young children also might find MagicBands convenient.
Disney Bands are given to guests who are either staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel or are an Annual Pass-holder. If you are staying outside of a Walt Disney World Resort you can still buy your band at the park.
If you're staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you get additional MagicBand benefits. You can use your MagicBand to: Unlock your room. Pay for meals and merchandise in the parks and resorts (you must enable this feature and set up a PIN)
With Disney MagicBands, you do not have to worry about carrying a key card with you wherever you go. Your band can be used to register to your room and serve as a key every time you need to enter.
You can use your phone. Create a Magic Mobile pass within the My Disney Experience app. As long as you're using your phone to only scan in YOURSELF (meaning not you AND the other members of your party), then it should be fine. It might be slower than using a MagicBand, but it still works.
If your MagicBands are still useable, all you need to do to reuse them is to make sure your new Walt Disney World theme park tickets and reservations are linked to the same My Disney Experience account that your MagicBands are on.
