Can I use my Lumo ticket on LNER?

Lumo Specific Tickets At your time of purchase, you'll be given a list of times and train operators that your ticket is valid on. If there is only one operator available, it will display just the one in the dropdown, such as LNER. If it states, 'multiple operators', more than one train company covers your chosen route.

That’s an excellent question, as the two companies operate on the same East Coast Main Line.

The short answer is: No, you cannot use a Lumo ticket to travel on an LNER train.

Here’s the detailed breakdown:

1. Strictly Separate Tickets

Lumo and LNER are separate, competing train operating companies. Their tickets are not interchangeable. A ticket issued by one company is only valid for travel on that specific company’s services, unless stated otherwise (which is extremely rare).

If you try to board an LNER train with a Lumo ticket, the conductor will ask you to buy a new, valid ticket for that service, and you may have to pay a penalty fare.

2. The Exception: “Any Permitted” Tickets

There is a crucial exception, but it doesn’t apply to most Lumo tickets: Some tickets, especially Advance tickets, are branded for a specific operator (e.g., “LUMO ONLY” or “LNER & CONNECTIONS”). However, many Anytime, Off-Peak, and Super Off-Peak tickets sold by both companies are often routed “Any Permitted.” An “Any Permitted” ticket is valid on both Lumo and LNER services (as well as other operators like Grand Central) between the same stations.

How to check your ticket: Look at the “Route” or “Operator” field on your ticket or booking confirmation. If it says “LUMO ONLY”Not valid on LNER. If it says ”
