Technically, you can walk from the Sintra train station to Pena Palace, but it is not recommended for most visitors. The walk is approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) and consists of a very steep, winding uphill climb that takes about 45 to 60 minutes. The road is narrow and often congested with Tuk-Tuks and buses, making the pedestrian experience less than ideal. In 2026, the vast majority of tourists take the 434 tourist bus, which loops from the station directly to the Palace gates, or hire a private Tuk-Tuk for about €10–€20. If you do choose to hike, it is better to take the Villa Sassetti trail, which is a dedicated forest path that is more scenic and safer than the main road. However, keep in mind that the Pena Palace grounds themselves involve a lot of walking and climbing, so saving your energy by taking transport to the entrance is usually the smarter strategic move for a day trip.
