Delta SkyMiles Platinum Medallion status is not permanent and typically expires at the end of the Medallion Year, which runs from February 1st of one year through January 31st of the next. To maintain Platinum status, you must re-earn the required number of Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs)—currently $15,000—within a single calendar year (January 1 to December 31). If you qualify for Platinum status in, for example, July 2025, you will hold that status for the remainder of 2025 and all of the 2026 Medallion Year, with your benefits finally expiring on January 31, 2027. If you do not meet the MQD threshold for the following year, your status will drop to a lower tier or expire entirely. The only way to achieve "permanent" or "lifetime" status with Delta is through the Million Miler program. Reaching 1 million lifetime miles grants you lifetime Silver status, and the tiers increase with more miles; however, even for the most frequent flyers, reaching "lifetime" Platinum status requires a massive 4 million lifetime miles. For the average traveler, status remains a year-by-year achievement that requires consistent loyalty and spending.
