How do you use Egates at Heathrow?

Faster checks with e-gates Simply scan your passport and allow our system to match your face to the chip in your passport. Most adults can use the e-gates with an electronic passport from: UK. EEA (European Economic Area)*

Using the eGates (Electronic Gates) at Heathrow in 2026 is a streamlined process available to citizens of the UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, and several other "trusted" nations. To use them, you must be at least 12 years old (children aged 12–17 must be accompanied by an adult). First, remove your passport from any cover and open it to the photo page. Place the photo page face-down on the glass reader and hold it firmly. Remove any hats, heavy glasses, or face coverings; you must look directly at the camera on the screen for facial recognition. Once the system matches your face to the biometric data in your passport chip, the gate will turn green and open. In 2026, most eGate delays are caused by passengers not standing still or failing to remove sunglasses. If the gate doesn't open, don't panic; a border officer is always nearby to manually check your documents at a standard desk.

The e-gates require the use of a biometric passport. On arrival and departure, the e-gates can be used by European Union, European Economic Area and Swiss citizens aged 16 and over. For non-EU citizens, the passports will be manually stamped by a border official after using the gates.
