How does Kansai area pass work?

Kansai Area Pass is valid for unlimited travel in the valid area on the map. Valid trains are below; - Reserved seats on Kansai-airport Express HARUKA. * For reserved seating, ensure you book your seats before boarding the train.

The Kansai Area Pass is a regional rail pass offered by JR West that provides unlimited travel on JR trains (including the "Haruka" airport express) within the Kansai region, covering Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, and Himeji. In 2026, you can purchase the pass for durations of 1, 2, 3, or 4 consecutive days. It is particularly useful for travelers arriving at Kansai International Airport (KIX), as it includes the train fare to the city centers. You can use the pass at automatic ticket gates and can even book up to two "reserved seats" on express trains during the pass's validity. A major benefit for families is that a pass holder can accompany up to two children (ages 1–5) for free. To use it, you must be a "Temporary Visitor" to Japan; you can buy it online and "exchange" your digital voucher for a physical pass at a JR station using your passport. It is an excellent value if you plan to do multiple day trips between the major cities in western Japan within a short timeframe.
