Excellent question. The time it takes for a Transport for London (TfL) charge to appear on your account depends on the method of payment you used.

Here’s a breakdown of the typical timelines:

1. Pay As You Go (Oyster or Contactless - Card/Phone/Watch)

This is the most common scenario. The charge doesn’t happen in real-time. Initial “Charge” (Pending Authorization): When you tap in, a small authorization charge (often £1 for buses, a maximum fare for Tube/train) may appear on your account immediately or within a few hours. This is not the final fare; it’s a temporary hold to ensure your payment method is valid. Final Charge: Your journeys are calculated overnight, and the correct fare is usually charged between midnight and 6 AM the following day. The pending authorization is then replaced. Capping: If you reach a daily or weekly fare cap, this will be applied automatically in the overnight calculation.

Summary for Contactless/Oyster: You’ll see a pending charge quickly, but the final, correct charge takes up to 24-48 hours to appear on your bank statement or online account.

2. Congestion Charge & ULEZ (Auto Pay)

If you have a registered vehicle and use Auto Pay, the process is different: Charge Date: The charge is taken automatically three days after the journey date. Example: If you drive in the zone on Monday, the payment will be taken from your card on Thursday.

Make sure you have enough balance to cover these as failed charges will result in your card being blacklisted by TfL until they can be cleared. This is not a Monzo specific issue, but rather just a result of the way TfL batch up contactless card charges and does not present charges during the weekend.
