To be precise, you don't ride a gondola up the Matterhorn mountain itself (which is only accessible by expert climbers), but rather to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (Klein Matterhorn), the highest cable car station in Europe. The journey from the village of Zermatt takes approximately 40 to 45 minutes in total. The trip is broken into three stages: first, a gondola from Zermatt to Furi; second, a larger cable car to Trockener Steg; and finally, the spectacular "Matterhorn Glacier Ride" 3S cable car to the summit station at 3,883 meters. In 2026, the new "Matterhorn Alpine Crossing" also allows you to continue the journey all the way into Cervinia, Italy. The ride offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the Swiss, French, and Italian Alps. Because of the extreme altitude and thin air at the top, visitors are advised to move slowly once they exit the gondola. The experience includes access to a viewing platform, a cinema lounge, and an ice palace carved directly into the glacier, making the 45-minute ascent one of the premier alpine experiences in the world.
