How much does it cost to go to the Cairns Lagoon?

Entry to the Cairns Lagoon is free and provides excellent barbecue facilities, perfect for birthday parties or afternoon family dinners.

In 2026, the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon remains one of the most iconic and accessible public facilities in Tropical North Queensland because it is completely free of charge. There is no entrance fee for locals or tourists to enjoy the 4,800-square-meter saltwater swimming pool. The facility is fully funded by the Cairns Regional Council and provides a safe, stinger-free environment for year-round swimming. Lifeguards are on duty during all operating hours (typically 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM), and the site includes free use of the surrounding timber decks, parklands, and public barbecue areas. While the swimming itself costs nothing, visitors should budget for small ancillary costs such as lockers (usually a few dollars) or if they choose to use the nearby metered parking. The lagoon is closed on Wednesday mornings until midday for weekly maintenance, but outside of that window, it serves as the ultimate "budget-friendly" hub for anyone looking to cool off in the heart of the Cairns CBD.

The water is very shallow only 2 - 3 feet deep at the most. As others have mentioned it is what most would consider a wading pool at best. But worth the trip, unlike the over commercialized and larger blue lagoon. It is small enough that you will be able to watch everyone from one location.
