How much of a layover do I need in Charlotte airport?

The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is fairly small compared to other international airports. All of the gates are accessible from inside … no monorails or busses. Provided that your arrival flight is on time and that your departure destination is domestic, 50 minutes should be more than sufficient.

For a domestic-to-domestic connection at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), a minimum of 45 to 60 minutes is generally sufficient, as the airport is designed in a "hub and spoke" layout where all gates are connected behind security. However, CLT is notorious for long walks between the far end of Concourse A and Concourse E, and the terminal is often very crowded. For peace of mind, a 90-minute layover is ideal. If you are connecting from an international flight to a domestic one, you will need at least 2.5 to 3 hours, as you must clear U.S. Customs, collect your checked bags, re-check them, and go through TSA security again. Charlotte is a major hub for American Airlines, and while they schedule "tight" 35-minute connections, any slight flight delay can result in a missed flight. In 2026, ongoing construction and expansion at CLT mean you should allow extra time to navigate the detours and the busy "moving walkways" in the main atrium.

There are even regional jet connections allowable at 25 minutes, though 30 and 35 minute connections are common. While many of these connections are doable, inbound aircraft can get slowed down in alleyways or while waiting for gates. So the last few minutes can be the difference between making a connection or not.

I'd want an hour or (better) two, at a minimum. Charlotte is not a bad airport to have a layover. Plenty of shops, restaurants and several nice areas to relax with rocking chairs. If you have checked bags they won't make it to the next plane.
