Is Destin a white sand beach?

Origin of Destin's Beautiful, White Sand The unique sand of the beaches in the Destin area is among the whitest and most homogenous of the world.

Yes, Destin, Florida, is world-famous for its "Sugar-White" sand, which is considered some of the whitest and finest in the world. The sand's unique color and texture are due to its composition: it is almost 99% pure Appalachian quartz. Over thousands of years, quartz from the Appalachian Mountains was eroded by the Apalachicola River and carried down into the Gulf of Mexico. The water then "polished" these quartz crystals into tiny, perfectly round grains and deposited them along the Florida Panhandle. Because the sand is pure quartz, it doesn't absorb heat from the sun like darker, volcanic, or shell-based sands do; even on a 95°F day in 2026, the sand in Destin remains cool to the touch. Another characteristic of this high-purity sand is the "squeaking" sound it makes when you walk on it, caused by the friction of the uniform quartz grains rubbing together. This pristine white environment is what creates the famous "Emerald" color of the water, as the white seafloor reflects the sunlight through the clear Gulf waves.
