Walking around Edinburgh Castle can be quite physically demanding due to its location atop an extinct volcano. The approach involves a 110-meter walk across the Esplanade at a 5-degree incline. Once inside, the terrain is characterized by steep, uneven cobblestones that can be slippery when wet. The steepest section, leading through Foog's Gate to the highest point at Crown Square, features a 15-degree gradient. While these slopes are challenging for those with mobility issues, the castle provides a complimentary mobility vehicle (on request at the gate) to shuttle guests to the top level. Many of the historic buildings have ramps, but the Prisons of War vaults and certain towers are only accessible via stone stairs. Visitors are strongly encouraged to wear sturdy, non-slip footwear and to pace themselves, as the constant elevation changes can be tiring even for active walkers.
