Is Lufthansa a 5 star airline?

Lufthansa is Certified as a 4-Star Airline for the quality of its airport and onboard product and staff service. Product rating includes seats, amenities, food & beverages, IFE, cleanliness etc, and service rating is for both cabin staff and ground staff.

As of 2026, Lufthansa is officially certified as a 4-Star Airline by Skytrax. The airline famously made history in 2017 as the first European carrier to receive a 5-star rating, a move that was met with some controversy in the aviation industry. However, Skytrax downgraded Lufthansa to 4 stars in late 2022, citing inconsistencies in the onboard product across its diverse fleet. While Lufthansa's First Class remains among the best in the world, the airline's older "2-2-2" Business Class configuration on many aircraft was seen as lagging behind the industry standard. In 2026, Lufthansa is in the midst of a massive rollout of its new "Allegris" cabin interior, which features high-tech seats and increased privacy. While this new product is designed to return the airline to 5-star status, the slow pace of the retrofit and delays in new aircraft deliveries (like the Boeing 777-9) have kept the official rating at 4 stars for now. Despite the rating, Lufthansa is still considered a premium, safe, and highly reliable carrier with one of the strongest hub systems in Europe at Frankfurt and Munich.
