Is Salou very touristy?

The golden beaches of Salou have helped make it the most visited holiday resort on the Costa Dorada.

Yes, Salou is extremely touristy, particularly during the peak summer months between June and September. Located on Spain's Costa Daurada, it is one of the most popular resort towns in Catalonia, largely due to its proximity to PortAventura World, one of Europe’s largest theme parks. The town is characterized by large hotel complexes, neon-lit bars, souvenir shops, and international fast-food chains catering primarily to British, Irish, French, and Russian tourists. The main beach, Platja de Llevant, is often "towel-to-towel" with people during July and August. While its reputation is built on high-energy nightlife and family-friendly attractions, you can find a more "authentic" Spanish feel if you head toward the nearby city of Tarragona or explore the quieter coves like Cala Crancs on the Cap Salou headland. For those who enjoy a bustling, vibrant atmosphere with plenty of English-speaking services and entertainment, Salou is perfect; however, if you are looking for a secluded, traditional Spanish village, Salou will likely feel overwhelming.

We have been going to Salou for a few years now, sometimes 4 times a year. Never noticed any smells at all. No worse than any other resort town. All the resorts I've been to have the occasional whiff now and again (nothing to do with me I promise).

Personally i think that Salou is very much like the Old Town part of Benidorm. Quieter than the Brit quarter but still things to do and see. I am 80% certain that I will go for the avenida, just for a change of scenery more than anything.

Whilst I love Benidorm, Salou is much more chilled out and a bit more family orientated. Salou is more of a chill out holiday for us. Benidorm will be full of stags hens in April/May so Salou may be the better choice for your little one that time of year, although a few degrees cooler than the Costa Blanca.

Lloret is by far the largest and most touristic place. In high season, life in Lloret goes on 24/7. Salou is smaller and relatively quieter. This is not only reflected in the amount of nightlife, but also in the activities and sights.
