Is the Animal Kingdom petting zoo open?

Affection Section has been closed since Disney's Animal Kingdom re-opened, but the petting zoo has now opened to guests again with additional health and safety measures. And, we're taking you with us to check out the new protocols and to see some sweet goats, sheep, and more!

Affection Section at Disney's Animal Kingdom officially re-opened this week, allowing guests to interact with, pet, and brush docile animals in a petting zoo setting. Prior to this reopening guests could see the animals, but not enter each pen area to actually get up close.

Affection Section is the only place in Disney's Animal Kingdom® Theme Park where you can have hands-on encounters with animals. Kids can brush the sheep and goats or get close enough to pet and feed the chickens, llamas and other animals in the yard.

Overview of The Affection Section In this outdoor petting zoo guests interact with smaller species animals such as goats, sheep, pigs, chickens and llamas. Though they look like regular petting zoo animals, some of them are somewhat exotic species including a Sicilian miniature donkey.

The buildings have the names of the different animals on them. The CM told us that none of the animals stay in their natural habitats at night. All animals that roam in their natural habitats during the daylight go into their assigned buildings and stables at night.

Consequently, you can spend a full day in Animal Kingdom if you pace yourself to avoid the aforementioned animal fatigue. Nevertheless, Animal Kingdom is the easiest park to accomplish in a partial day; you can either arrive early or stay late at Animal Kingdom and do the entire park with relative ease.

Also, there are tables set up with items about the animals and always someone there to tell you about the articles on the tables. Outside is the petting area. They do not let you feed the animals, but have grooming brushes that you can brush the animals.

A lot of this has to do with the fact that Animal Kingdom is home to many different animals that require care. This requires the park to close earlier than others so cast members can care for the animals and prepare for the next day.

Objectively, the best days to visit Animal Kingdom are weekdays. Across the board, average daily wait times are lower Monday through Friday than they are Saturday or Sunday.

While Disney has found ways to extend the fun into the afternoon and evening hours, most of the animals viewed here are far more active, and therefore visible, in the morning. I strongly recommend you arrive at the park at opening time, or as soon afterwards as possible, to maximize your visit.

Suitcases, bags, coolers or backpacks, with or without wheels, larger than 24 long x 15 wide x 18 high (61 cm x 38 cm x 46 cm) are not allowed in any theme park or water park. Loose or dry ice is not permitted in these containers. Re-usable ice packs are recommended.

There are a few restrictions on what you can bring into the parks, including glass bottles, but you shouldn't have any problem with your stainless steel cup (which will keep your water nice and cold!). In fact, most counter-service locations offer complimentary ice water upon request!

The worst day of the week to visit has historically been Monday! Perhaps it's because people expect the weekends to be the busiest, so they go with a weekday instead. Nonetheless, Monday wait times might be a bit higher than you'd want.

Fireworks show: There is not a fireworks show at Animal Kingdom. Rivers of Light show: FP+ This nighttime show on the Discovery River is held each night (weather permitting) and during busy times may be shown twice. Guests view the show from stands located near Expedition Everest.
