Is Tron a fast ride?

The ride speeds up to 59 miles per hour at the start, making it, along with its sister ride, TRON Lightcycle Power Run in Shanghai, the fastest at any Disney park in the world. (For reference, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Walt Disney World hits 57 miles per hour.)

TRON Lightcycle / Run at Disney's Magic Kingdom is currently the fastest coaster at any Disney park in the world, reaching a top speed of nearly 60 miles per hour. The ride is categorized as a "high-tech, high-speed thrill ride" and is famous for its exhilarating launch, which blasts riders out from the loading station and under a massive, color-shifting canopy. Unlike traditional coasters where you sit in a chair, TRON features unique motorbike-style vehicles that allow you to lean forward into the action, heightening the sensation of speed. While the top speed of 60 mph might seem modest compared to "giga-coasters" at regional parks like Six Flags, the combination of the leaning position, the pulsing electronic soundtrack by Daft Punk, and the neon-lit "Grid" environment makes it feel significantly faster and more intense. The ride is relatively short—lasting about 60 to 90 seconds—but it delivers a high-adrenaline experience that is a major departure from the slower, story-based dark rides typically found in the Magic Kingdom. Due to its popularity, you will likely need to join a virtual queue or purchase a Lightning Lane Single Pass to experience this digital race.

TRON does move up and down a fair bit, but there's very little of that “stomach-drop” feeling with your feet leaving the floor. That's for two reasons. The first is that on a Lightcycle your head points down, not your feet. But the bigger reason is that almost all of TRON's rise-and-drop motion includes a turn.

If so, TRON should be on your list! It's not the fastest ride in Disney World (that title goes to Test Track, which tops out at about 65 MPH), but it's pretty close. During the initial launch, TRON riders get close to hitting 60 MPH. Essentially, it's about as fast as if you were riding a motorcycle on the highway.

The ride is adjacent to Space Mountain, Disney's original high-thrill coaster, which will make comparisons inevitable. Tron is smoother and much faster – Space Mountain maxes out at a relatively tame 27 mph. But the nostalgic in me preferred the jerky, in-the-dark dips and turns of Space Mountain.

Indeed, there are a great many elements that went into creating TRON Lightycle Run that works in harmony to create a thrilling experience. That said, many of the initial reviews of the ride noted how short the actual ride experience is. From launch to final deceleration, you're looking at about 60 seconds of ride time.

I fit great on the test seats and had an easy time loading onto the ride itself. I did see a woman of a similar size as me for whom the test seats did not work, and I think it was because she had larger calves. The ride has a bar that drops behind your calves as a point of security.
