What do you do with luggage on Trenitalia train?

Trenitalia has no official luggage allowance. As a rule, you must be able to handle your own luggage and store it safely in the luggage areas located throughout the train.

Excellent question! Handling luggage on Trenitalia trains is straightforward, but there are some key things to know for a smooth trip.

Here’s a complete guide on what to do with your luggage:

The Golden Rules:

  • You keep your luggage with you at all times. There are no separate luggage cars or checked baggage services.
  • You are responsible for your own bags. Trenitalia’s liability for lost/damaged luggage is very limited, so keep valuables with you.
  • It must fit in the designated storage areas without blocking aisles or doors.

Where to Put Your Luggage:

1. Overhead Racks (The most common spot) Found in: All trains (Regionale, Intercity, Frecciarossa, etc.). Best for: Carry-on sized suitcases, backpacks, and medium bags. Capacity: They are spacious on modern high-speed trains (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca). On older Regional trains, space can be more limited.

2. Luggage Racks at the End of Carriages Found in: High-speed and Intercity trains. Best for: Larger suitcases that won’t fit overhead. Look for: Open shelving or dedicated spaces near the entrance doors. This is a secure spot as it’s in your line of sight if you’re seated nearby.

3. Space Between Back-to-Back Seats Found in: Most trains with rows of seats. Best for: Medium-sized suitcases or bags. Note
