What happens if you forget to tap out on bus?

If you forget to tap out, you will be charged maximum fare. Every time you enter a bus, maximum fare is deducted. When you tap out, the system calculates the bus-stops and deducts what is relevant and returns the rest.

Forgetting to tap out on a bus with a distance-based fare system (like pay-as-you-go with a card) usually results in you being charged a maximum fare or a penalty fare.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of what typically happens, and what you should do:

1. What Happens Automatically

  • You are charged the maximum possible fare for that route. Since the system doesn’t know where you got off, it assumes you traveled to the final stop.
  • You may not earn the transfer discount (if applicable) for your next trip, as your previous trip isn’t properly closed.
  • In some systems, multiple “tap-in only” trips can lead to a temporary block on your card until the unresolved trips are cleared.

2. Why This Happens (The Reason)

Modern transit cards work on a “tap in, tap out” principle for buses and trains where fare is calculated by distance: Tap In: The system records your starting point and charges an initial “hold” amount (often the maximum fare). Tap Out: The system calculates the exact distance traveled, deducts the correct fare, and refunds the difference of the hold amount.

No tap out = No calculation = You keep the maximum charge.

3. What You Should Do Immediately

Most transit agencies have a process to correct this. Here are the common steps:

  1. Tap Your Card on the Next Reader: Sometimes, if you tap on the next bus or train you take (or even a validator at a station), the system will automatically close your previous trip at the default point and charge the
