What is a Disney standby queue?

Standby Queue: This is the traditional queue or line quests wait in for attractions. All guests have access to the standby line during theme park operating hours. Virtual Queue: Occasionally, a virtual queue may be used for select attractions or experiences.

Lightning Lane is simply the name for the line you use to skip standby! These attractions are selected one at a time using the My Disney Experience app, beginning as early as 7:00 AM. You don't choose all your rides for the day at that time, though!

Virtual Queue Basics Basically, instead of standing in a regular standby line, you'll try to get a spot in a virtual queue that holds your place in a virtual line with other guests. If a ride has a virtual queue setup, that means there will NOT be a “standard” queue you can just stand and wait in.

If you want to avoid long lines there's no simpler way than to wake up early and get to the park before it opens. Whether you have access to early entry or not, being at the park entrance before it opens will save you lots of time. Usually, you can get in 2-3 rides during the first hour of park operation.

People flying standby go to check-in as usual and pass through security. At the gate, the waiting begins. Holders of standby tickets do not have a mandatory right to carriage. This means that they can only fly if all seats are not already occupied by passengers with regular tickets.

Genie+ is a paid skip-the-line service that allows guests to enter through a special line called the Lightning Lane (think of the former FASTPASS Return Entrance) rather than the standby line. Not all Disneyland attractions are available with Genie Plus, which we'll get into below.

There are only two attractions at Walt Disney World Resort that don't have a standby line, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and TRON Lightcycle / Run, but you do not need to purchase Disney Genie+ service to join the Virtual Queue for either of those attractions.

On average the lightning lane will always have a much shorter wait time compared to the standard Disney World line, but it usually combines with the regular line before the ride. As a result, it's common to have a wait time of around 5-10 minutes, even when using the Lightning Lane.

Most wait times are 45 minutes or more during peak time, with top rides reaching 120 minutes or more. Seeing long wait times can be a deterrent, which is why Disney is eliminating wait times for attractions. Imagine you're in Tomorrowland and you just got off of Space Mountain. The Genie 120-minute rule says that you can make a new reservation at most 2 hours from when you made the last one, and this countdown timer doesn't change if you modify the reservation. If you made it at, say, 11 a.m., then your two hours will be up at 1 p.m. even if you modify the reservation at noon.
