The primary difference between the legacy FastPass system and the newer Genie+ (now officially transitioned into the Lightning Lane Multi Pass in 2024–2026) is the cost and the booking mechanics. FastPass was a free service included with every park ticket that allowed guests to obtain physical or digital return times for specific rides. In contrast, the newer system is a paid service, with pricing that fluctuates daily based on demand. Furthermore, FastPass allowed for "repeat" bookings on the same ride if availability permitted, whereas the current system generally limits guests to one Lightning Lane entry per attraction, per day. Additionally, the current system is entirely integrated into the "My Disney Experience" or Disneyland apps, requiring a smartphone for all selections. While both systems aim to reduce time spent in standby lines, the modern iteration is a "premium" product that requires strategic planning and a financial investment that was never a part of the original, more egalitarian FastPass experience.
