What is the VelociCoaster ride like?

An incline follows taking the train into a 125-degree overbanked turn, leading into a banked airtime hill, a 133-degree overbanked turn, and a speed hill. Riders then reach the coaster's signature element, a heartline roll dubbed the "Mosasaurus Roll", which inverts riders over water at 53 mph (85 km/h).

The Jurassic World VelociCoaster at Universal’s Islands of Adventure is widely regarded as one of the best and most intense roller coasters in the world. It is a "launched" coaster that features two distinct high-speed accelerations: the first hits 50 mph in 2 seconds, and the second blasts you from 40 to 70 mph in just 2.4 seconds. The ride is famous for its "airtime"—the sensation of floating out of your seat—which happens 12 times throughout the layout. Key highlights include a 155-foot "top hat" tower with an 80-degree drop and the terrifying Mosasaurus Roll, a barrel roll taken at high speed just inches above the water. Unlike many older coasters, it uses a lap-bar-only restraint system, which provides a terrifying sense of freedom during its four inversions. The experience is "whippy" and extremely smooth, themed around a raptor paddock, making it a high-adrenaline must-ride for thrill-seekers who enjoy sustained speed and unique "out-of-seat" forces.

The VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure is an exhilarating roller coaster experience themed around the Jurassic Park/World franchise. Here’s what you can expect from the ride:

Theming and Queue

  • The queue immerses you in the world of Velociraptors, with detailed environments, props, and storytelling inspired by the movies. You’ll pass through the Raptor Research Center, where you’ll see raptor enclosures and learn about the genetic engineering behind these creatures.
  • The pre-show features Dr. Wu, a character from the Jurassic World films, who introduces the ride as a test of the raptors’ agility and speed.

The Ride Experience

  • Intensity: VelociCoaster is a launch coaster, meaning it accelerates riders to high speeds without the traditional lift hill. It’s fast, thrilling, and designed for adrenaline seekers.
  • Launches: The ride features two powerful launches. The first propels you to 70 mph, while the second is even more intense, reaching 80 mph.
  • Inversions: The coaster includes four inversions, such as a mosaic roll (a unique heartline roll) and a barrel roll over the lagoon.
  • Air Time: There are several moments of weightlessness, including a top hat element that sends riders 155 feet into the air before plunging back down.
  • Smoothness: Despite its intensity, the ride is incredibly smooth, thanks to its modern design and engineering.

Physical Requirements

  • The ride is intense and not recommended for those who are sensitive to high speeds, inversions, or rapid movements. Riders must meet minimum height requirements (typically 51 inches/130 cm).

Overall Experience

VelociCoaster is widely praised for its perfect blend of storytelling and thrills. It’s one of the most highly rated roller coasters in the world, combining cutting-edge coaster technology with the immersive Jurassic World universe. Whether you’re a coaster enthusiast or a Jurassic Park fan, it’s a must-ride attraction!
